Funding Priorities

In accordance with the Trust Deed expenditure is split between the welfare of former employees and their dependents and donations of a more general nature to charitable organisations.

Welfare

Nearly two thirds of the budget for each year is spent on retired employees who are in need. To qualify for support retired staff need to have served at least ten years with the company and be aged over fifty when they left the company. There are also financial limits concerning both capital and income that have to be met. Former employees are visited by one of a small team of 6 full and part time welfare officers to identify and confirm instances of need. Support is also given to the Laing retirement clubs. A magazine is produced quarterly that is sent to all retirees that request it.

Former employees, who have not previously had contact with the Trust, should contact the Welfare Manager at the address given on the Contacts page.

Charitable Donations for 2006

The Trust has always tried to match its area of donations to sectors allied to the Company’s business. Recently the Trust has concentrated its support on charities that support the following main themes: Education, Homelessness and in particular day centres and their work with health related aspects of homeless people, Disadvantaged young people, Community regeneration. An increasing amount is also being set aside under the heading of Environment.

The Trust takes a pro-active role in seeking out charities that fit its criteria.

Donations can range from £250 to £25,000 with up to a dozen donations of more that £10,000. Generally, charities receive “one-off” donations with a very small number that are supported for an agreed period often up to three years.

The first donation to a charity that writes an unsolicited bid is unlikely to exceed £5,000.

The Budget for all grants in 2006 has been set at £850,000. A significant proportion of this has been already allocated.

Applications from staff of the company

Incorporated within the overall budget are two schemes of special relevance to staff of the Company.

Firstly, LCT will match any funds raised by staff, for a charity of their choice, although animal charities are not encouraged, generally up to a maximum of £1,000 per event. This limit is reduced to £500 if there is some personal benefit involved in the project. (i.e. an overseas fund raising activity.)

Secondly, through the “Make a Difference” campaign LCT will support charities or voluntary organisations where a member of staff or their immediate family is actively involved in a charity or local community group, including children doing a charitable gap year project.

In addition the Trust will support existing staff or their immediate family if they have a serious problem such as needing to adapt their house through a disability as long as no alternative sources are available.

Applications from staff are accepted at any time.

Named Funds in other Foundations

In addition to these direct payments LCT has set up “named funds” in five local/County Community Foundations namely Cumbria, Tyne & Wear, South Yorkshire, Bristol and Hertfordshire. These are endowment funds to provide on-going support to local charities.

Applications to these organisations should be made directly to the Foundation concerned.
