John Laing and Sodexho announce financial close on £361million hospital deal in North Staffs

Wednesday, June 20, 2007

Healthcare Support (North Staffs) Ltd, a consortium between John Laing Social Infrastructure (a division of John Laing plc) and Sodexho, has announced financial close on a £361million hospitals project in North Staffordshire.

The project will see the construction of two new hospitals in the Stoke-on-Trent area: an 11,000sq m community hospital to be known as Haywood Hospital which will be completed by 2009; and a 90,000sq m acute hospital, to be known as University Hospital of North Staffordshire for completion in 2014.

The hospitals are being developed by John Laing Social Infrastructure and Sodexho for University Hospital of North Staffordshire NHS Trust and Stoke-on-Trent Primary Care Trust. Full integrated Facilities Management services will be provided by Sodexho. Construction, which will be undertaken by Laing O’Rourke, will begin immediately.  RyderHKS is the architect.

The 37 year concession also includes a Managed Equipment Service for the provision of medical equipment, including PACS, provided by Siemens Medical Solutions and voice and data services, to be provided by Affiniti, a Kingston Communications business.

Mike Brereton, Chairman of University Hospital of North Staffordshire, is delighted the project has come to fruition and says, “This area has been in need of new hospitals and a new way of providing healthcare for many years, but this PFI construction programme is about more than new hospital buildings.  It is a major element in the drive to regenerate the economy of North Staffordshire.  The impact of the Fit for the Future programme and the work of our partners over the next few years will transform the quality of life of our children and our grandchildren.  Nothing could be more important.”

David Hardy, Managing Director of John Laing Social Infrastructure, said: “We are absolutely delighted to have reached this important milestone in this major project.  We look forward to working in partnership with the Trust to support its vision of providing modern, world-class facilities and healthcare provision for the people of North Staffordshire.”

Iain Anderson, Managing Director of Sodexho Healthcare said: ”I have had a team dedicated to this project for several years and they have worked very closely with John Laing and the Trust in developing the intricate services that will support the Trusts’ local Healthcare ambitions. I am delighted that we will be working together to deliver these to the local community”.
