John Laing Projects & Developments, along with support services and construction company Carillion have won its second top industry award for work to upgrade the southern section of the Chiltern line, including Marylebone and Beaconsfield stations, for Chiltern Railways.
Evergreen 2 was a two-year design, build, finance and transfer (DBFT) contract and make UK rail history as the first of its kind in the rail industry. It was completed and handed over both one time and below budget.At the National Rail Awards on Wednesday 5 September 2007, Evergreen 2 scooped the prestigious Project of the Year award.
The project was also awarded Public Private Finance’s accolade for the Best Operational Central Government project, earlier in the year.
Work included the provision of two additional platforms at Marylebone, permanent way alterations, drainage, lighting and signalling works. Beaconsfield station also benefited from an increase in line speed to 75 mph created by permanent way realignment and signalling enhancements.

Chiltern Railways have benefited from the improvements which has enabled the company to run more trains, reduce delays and increase the reliability of its services
Brian Cooke, Chairman of rail customer pressure group, London Travel Watch has previously stated: “This unique and very successful model shows that there are ways to expand the capacity of London’s rail system without direct calls on taxpayer funds.”
