Kinnegar Waste Water Treatment Plant, Belfast, UK

The new plant has been built to replace and upgrade existing facilities at the site on the edge of Belfast Lough, providing a modern and high quality process for approximately one third of the population of Belfast.

Wastewater from the catchment area is directed to the plant for processing via the client’s existing sewerage system. The new plant is required to process the wastewater and to discharge the effluent into the sea twice a day, following treatment designed to meet a number of specified environmental criteria.

The scheme is now well into the operating phase. Having completed the construction work the consortium, Coastal Clear Water, is now responsible for the operation and maintenance of the works over the contract period of 25 years. The concession will transfer back to Water Services Northern Ireland at the end of the contract.

Coastal Clear Water Ltd is a wholly owned subsidiary of John Laing and Lagan Holdings Ltd. John Laing’s stake in the Kinnegar Wastewater Treatment Works project in Belfast Northern Ireland was purchased in January 2001 as part of the Hyder portfolio acquisition.
