Indeed, Europe led the way in PPPs for road schemes, with countries such as Spain, Portugal, France and most recently, Norway, employing similar structures for the delivery of toll roads over the last decade. Major road schemes are now in the pipeline for Norway, Austria and Germany.
The UK has however led the way in the delivery of social infrastructure such as hospitals, and schools, and as a result of its success, similar projects are now under review in Europe (and elsewhere), representing a major opportunity for experienced PFI contractors.
