Investment Manager

John Laing is growing its market leading infrastructure investment business in the UK, in to the United States.  We are recruiting a team to develop our business across the US, based from our office in White Plains, New York.  In joining us you will have the opportunity to be part of a new venture, supported by established and successful teams in London, as we bid for P3 Infrastructure projects in North America.
We are recruiting locally at all levels, and we are flexible as to your background, be it technical or construction focussed, commercial or project finance focussed. 

Working with a Senior Investment Manager, and supported at Analyst level, the Investment Manager will take a managing role in bidding P3 / PPP projects, or will engage in specific working groups within a bidding team, so as to take a consortium from pre-qualification to preferred bidder and through to financial close.

The Role:

• Develop a partnership approach with our client and co investing sponsors, involving all parties
• Be a manager and representative for most, if not all, aspects of John Laing’s input and involvement in the bid team (where a co-sponsor leads the bid team)
• Manage the bid team on behalf of investing sponsors, working within a framework of agreed sponsor strategies (where John Laing leads the bid team)
• Understand the risks on the Project and control the transfer of those risks
• Work with co-investors, the service provider and advisors to produce an integrated bid submission which meets the Client’s requirements
• Manage the bidding process including establishing budgets, controlling expenditure, programme management and co-ordinating the activities of the whole team
• Take a managing role in the negotiation of contracts to financial close
• Represent John Laing in managing the investment through the Operational phase of the project, including ad-hoc projects associated with them (refinancing / restructuring etc)
• Support secondary acquisitions of existing investments
• Depending on the project location, there will be a need for significant travel within the US, and to co-locate within project offices, away from home, at key stages of bidding activity as agreed with partners

 Skills and Experience Required:

• Proven experience in (i) P3 / PPP, in Project Finance, or in another related financial discipline OR (ii) in structuring and managing infrastructure /construction projects
• Previous experience of key elements of P3 / PPP (such as the principles of Project Agreements or payment mechanisms) OR similar complex commercial structures
• Experience in or exposure to managing a team to achieve a successful result (such as a financial close, a major contract win, or similar)
• Ability to work under pressure, as part of a dead lined programme
• Commercial acumen and negotiating ability
• Strong interpersonal, communication and influencing skills; ability to engage the client and build an effective network
• A team player, energetic, competitive and with a desire to achieve
• Capable of absorbing information and comprehending it in a short time span
• A flexible approach to undertaking a variety of tasks, in new situations
• Proven experience of working in a cross cultural environment is desirable, though not essential
• IT literate
• A relevant degree or equivalent
• A financial, legal or construction related qualification would be an advantage, as would be membership of a professional institution
