The Barts and The London New Hospitals Programme

Valued at more than £1 billion the Barts and Royal London hospitals project is the largest PFI hospital project to be undertaken to date. The redevelopment of the two hospitals will cover a built area of 270,000 square metres or 2.9 million square feet. The new hospitals will have up to 1,248 patient beds of which 40% will be in single en-suite rooms.

John Laing is an investor and shareholder in the SPV, Capital Hospitals Ltd. The design and build contractor is Skanska, with soft facilities management provided by Carillion and hard by Skanska Rashleigh Weatherfoil.

Barts, the oldest hospital in Britain, dating back to 1123, is to become a cancer and cardiac centre of excellence, with most clinical services based in a new eight-storey facility.

The Royal London Hospital, which dates back to 1740, includes London’s leading trauma and emergency care centre, the capital’s second largest children’s hospital and one of Europe’s leading renal units. It will be housed in a landmark 18 storey building and London’s air ambulance, which is based at the hospital, will operate from the top of the new building.
