Job Background

John Laing Group (JLG) is an international originator, investor and manager of infrastructure projects awarded under government backed Public-Private Partnership (PPP) programmes and renewable energy projects, both across a range of international markets including the UK, Europe, Asia Pacific, North America and Latin America.

John Laing has been active in Australia since the beginning of 2010 and established offices in Melbourne and Sydney in 2011. The APAC team originates, invests and manages a range of investments across the PPP and renewable energy sectors in Australia and New Zealand.


Job Purpose

Contribute to the growth of the business by supporting the APAC team’s involvement in the development, origination, bidding and financial closure of investments across the PPP and other approved sectors.


Principal Responsibilities

Provide commercial and financial advice and analysis and represent John Laing’s interests in contractual negotiations on key project issues
Scope, appoint and manage consultants including financial, legal, tax, accounting, technical, insurance and other specialist advisers, ensuring that John Laing’s requirements are met
Review and comment on the range of project documents including Project Agreements, D&C/EPC Contracts, O&M/FM Contracts, Finance Documents, Shareholder Agreements etc.
Prepare and negotiate Sponsor / Bid Agreements / Heads of Terms with co-sponsors, sub-contractors and consultants
Ensure that investments are secured on terms and returns consistent with the business objectives and established investment / risk criteria
Prepare investment papers, present to Investment Committee and obtain all relevant internal investment approvals
Assist in the formulation of bid strategy and support the development of bid proposals
Developing external relationships/networks
Maintain awareness of relevant market trends and research into issues which effect John Laing’s activities in the APAC region
Undertake background research into potential new investment classes
Identify and analyse potential value enhancement opportunities across portfolio assets
Develop internal networks with the various JLG teams nationally and internationally.


Ensure compliance with all health and safety, quality and environment legislation and standards
Depending on the project location there may be a need to travel and, on occasion, stay away from home
Carry out additional ad hoc duties as required

Knowledge & Experience

Minimum of 5 years’ of Australia-focussed experience covering origination through to financial close in the PPP sector, as part of at least 8 years professional experience.  Broader infrastructure and development experience highly desirable e.g. renewable energy and storage, waste to energy, social housing / build to rent, student accommodation, transmission, etc.
Solid commercial acumen having previously taken key roles in commercial workstreams
Ability to interpret and interrogate key inputs into complex financial models
Project or workstream management exposure desirable
Good understanding of risk management practices.


Excellent communication and interpersonal skills - credibility in dealing with clients, partners, subcontractors and funders
Proactive and possessing a successful track record playing a key role in commercial negotiations
Able to build relationships from scratch with a range of stakeholders, with demonstrated influencing and persuasion skills
Strong attention to detail with high degree of focus on accuracy
Ability to work under pressure and to deadlines
Strong written communication / report writing skills
Ability to “think outside the box” and implement the resultant solution
Ability to work effectively as a member of a team
Self-motivated and results orientated
A hands-on and pragmatic approach
Commitment to ongoing learning and development.


Graduate qualifications in a relevant field, for example law, finance, economics, engineering or business.
Relevant postgraduate qualifications desirable.
